DR Congo Cargo Plane Crashes

Kinshasa, October 12, 2019 (CABNC): The country’s Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed that a cargo plane that had gone missing has crashed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Antonov An-72 transport aircraft was carrying presidential staff crashed in eastern Congo on Thursday, killing all eight passengers and Russian crew members.

The traffic control lost contact with the Antonov aircraft about an hour after it took off from the eastern city of Goma for the capital, Kinshasa.

“Debris of the plane has been found, the bodies were all burnt to ashes and the cause of the crash is not yet clear,” said Congolese presidential adviser Vidiye Tshimanga.

The aircraft – whose passengers included military personnel – had provided logistical support for a visit to eastern DR Congo by President Felix Tshisekedi.

Similar incidents involving ageing Antonov planes are common in DR Congo. Two years ago 12 people died in a crash near Kinshasa.

Local media showed a crowd of hundreds of Tshisekedi supporters hitting the streets of Kinshasa after the news broke on Friday morning, fearing that the plane crash had been some kind of failed coup attempt against Tshisekedi
